The Special Operations Battalion was created in 2002. It serves as the city's operation command during certain operations.
The Special Operations Battalion operates 7 pieces of apparatus. There is (1) Special Operations Rescue Services
Heavy Rescue, (2) Special Operations Medium Duty Rescues, (1) Emergency Response Unit, (1) Special Operations Mobile
Communications Center, (1) Special Operations Command Center and (1) Special Operations Battalion Chief's Truck. The
Special Operations Battalion responds to all Mass Casualty Incidents (MCI), Long-term operation fires, and Rescues involving:
Confined Spaces, Building Collapses, Water, SCUBA, High and Low Angle, and other extended operation Rescues. The Special Operations
Battalion can also be called by any Incident Commander seeking the expertise provided by the Special Operations firefighters.
All Special Operations Battalion firefighters go through years of extra training. All Special Operations firefighters must
have come from a Rescue prior to joining the Special operations Battalion. All of the firefighters must also have a minimum
of an Accociate's degree in Fire Science. All of the firefighter in the Special Operations Battalion have a minimum certification
of EMT-D, as well as certifications in SCUBA rescue, Swift Water Rescue, Confined Space rescue, High and Low Angle rescue,
and all firefighter are at least Technician Level Haz-Mat but most are Expert Level. Unlike the department's standard,
Special Operations firefighters take manditory physicals every 4 months (3 times a year) rather than the department's
once a year. The Special Operations Battalion is the most elite group of firefighters in the city.
